TSA Vape Rules: How to Take a Vape Pen on a Plane
We’d love to see a Samuel Jackson spinoff called Vapes on a Plane. It’s a much less exciting movie than Snakes on a Plane, with a lot less venomous serpents and a lot more French inhales—but all told Vapes on a Plane makes for a much more enjoyable, relaxed travel experience. In all seriousness, though, getting busted by TSA can be worse than a snakebite in the groin, so we’ve put together this guide to answer the question: can I bring my vape pen on a plane with all my essential weed accessories?
First off, let’s answer another question that’s still getting asked:
Can I bring weed or dabs on a plane?
How about TSA answers that one for you:
“TSA security officers do not search for marijuana or other drugs. In the event a substance that appears to be marijuana is observed during security screening, TSA will refer the matter to a law enforcement officer.
Whether or not marijuana is considered legal under local law is not relevant to TSA screening because TSA is governed by federal law. Federal law provides no basis to treat medical marijuana any differently than non-medical marijuana.” - TSA.gov
So no—you can’t technically bring weed or dabs on a plane. That’s the simple answer. That said, people much less notorious than Boston George have brought weed or dabs on planes without so much as a peep from TSA. The government is, as they acknowledge, more interested in thwarting the plots of terrorists than ruining the weekends of traveling stoners. That said, if you decide to travel with weed or dabs, do so carefully, and at your own risk.
Can I bring my vape pen on a plane?
Okay, moving on to the question of the day. While bringing a half ounce of dank dispensary bud on an airplane isn’t exactly condoned by the government (big surprise there), what about a vaporizer? This comes directly from TSA’s website:
“The FAA prohibits these devices in checked baggage. Battery-powered E-cigarettes, vaporizers, vape pens, atomizers, and electronic nicotine delivery systems may only be carried in the aircraft cabin (in carry-on baggage or on your person). Check with your airline for additional restrictions. Remove all electronic cigarette and vaping devices from carry-on bags if checked at the gate or planeside.”
Know The Rules
Essentially, this means that TSA doesn’t care at all if you bring your vape, so long as it’s not in your checked bag. But given their marijuana policy, we recommend you empty and clean your vape ahead of time, and make sure that any oil cartridges are disposed of properly.
Keep it Out of Sight
While TSA isn’t actively looking for your personal stash, it doesn’t help to advertise it with flashy colors, loose paraphernalia, and stereotypical Bob Marley prints. That’s why we developed the Safety Case—to be as discreet as possible and avoid any unwanted attention. The Safety Case itself and all of its components are perfectly legal to fly with. After touching down in your destination you just need to pick up some herb.
The Safety Case is small, unassuming, and professional-looking. It appears to be a phone case, a leather wallet, or something equally harmless.
If we had just one piece of advice for the traveling stoner, it’s this: clean your kit! So long as you’re not traveling with traces of weed and resin in your 420 Travel Kit, you’re good to go bringing your essentials on a plane. We recommend carefully cleaning pipes, chillums, vapes etcetera before boarding.
Store it in Your Carry-on
Discrete and simple, a travel-friendly smoking kit like the Safety Case makes traveling less stressful. By keeping it in your carry-on, you comply with TSA regulations regarding vape pens. If you don’t have a vape pen, go ahead and check it (it’s worth noting that checked bags are searched less than carry-on bags).
Conceal Accessories in Smell Proof Case
Everyone has a charger, various vape accessories, and other 420 travel kit essentials that are required upon arrival. Instead of making a stop at a random headshop, pack all your vaping accessories in a sleek, discreet smell proof vape case. Traveling is a lot easier when you're mind is at peace, knowing everything you need is hiding in plain sight.
